Module Two discusses the key legislation surrounding the development of important equality and diversity policy in the UK. There is particular attention paid to the Equality Act 2010 and its importance and application in schools with information on OFSTED policies and expectations for schools.

Practical Integration of British Values in Schools

The OFSTED ‘School Inspection Handbook’ states that schools are still assessed on “ how well leaders promote British values through the curriculum, assemblies, wider opportunities, visits, discussions and literature”

It is important to mention that promoting British Values isn’t just about an annual assembly or additional collapsed lesson on the timetable, although these can of course help.  It is much bigger than that, it is an ethos that we are trying to build within a school.  However, it also isn’t about reinventing the wheel – the vast majority of schools already have a rich and varied SMSC curriculum which is already statutory– whatever type of school you work in.  Therefore advise from the DfE is to promote British Values through SMSC and the broader curriculum.
